- Source: NYPD Complaint Data Current (Year To Date) and NYPD Complaint Data Historic on NYC Open Data (
5uac-w243,qgea-i56i), deduplicated by complaint number. Shootings: NYPD Shooting Incident data (5ucz-vwe8). Pulled 2026-09-14. - What counts: every NYPD crime complaint category (felonies, misdemeanors and violations), counted where the complaint was reported. "Violent" means NYPD offense codes 101, 104, 105, 106: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and felony assault. Complaints NYPD publishes without a location are not counted.
- Denominator: 2020 Census population by 2020 Neighborhood Tabulation Area (NYC Department of City Planning). All 8,804,190 residents for the citywide rate; the residents of each neighborhood's NTAs for neighborhood and borough rates.
- Citywide window: complaints dated July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, the latest date NYPD had published when the data was pulled.
- Borough and neighborhood window: complaints dated June 30, 2025 through June 29, 2026 inside each neighborhood's NTA boundaries, excluding complaints with no felony/misdemeanor/violation class. The year-over-year change compares that window with the 12 months before it, measured the same way.
- Borough rate: total complaints in a borough's tracked neighborhoods divided by their combined population. NTA boundaries follow community districts, so a borough's NTA total can differ slightly from its official count (the Kingsbridge-Marble Hill NTA, for example, is coded to the Bronx).
Limitations
- Reported is not actual. Complaints are crimes reported to the NYPD. Unreported crime is missing, and reporting rates differ between neighborhoods.
- Borough figures are partial. They cover the 127 neighborhoods with DwellCheck safety pages (80.5% of New Yorkers), from 59% of residents in Queens to 99% in Manhattan. The citywide figure covers the whole city.
- Two windows, one day apart. The citywide count and the neighborhood counts come from two DwellCheck pulls of the same NYPD datasets whose 12-month windows start and end one day apart, and only the neighborhood counts drop unclassified complaints. They are reported separately and never added together.
- Per-resident rates favor residential areas. Districts that draw workers, shoppers and visitors have high rates per resident, because many of the people there when crimes are reported do not live there.
- Population is from 2020. Neighborhoods that have grown since the 2020 Census show higher rates than their current population would give.
