Frequently Asked Questions
What is a livability score?
A livability score is a comprehensive rating that combines multiple quality-of-life factors into a single number from 0-100. DwellCheck analyzes building health, safety, transit access, amenities, noise levels, and more to calculate an overall livability grade for any NYC address.
How is the livability score calculated?
Scores start at 100 and are adjusted based on positive factors (good transit, parks nearby) and negative factors (violations, crime, noise). Different categories have different weights - building health and safety are weighted highest because they most directly affect daily life.
What data sources does DwellCheck use?
We use 15+ official data sources including: HPD violations and complaints, DOB violations, NYPD crime data, MTA subway data, NYC Parks, 311 complaints, Census demographics, bedbug reports, air quality data, and more. All data comes from NYC Open Data and federal sources.
How often is the data updated?
NYC Open Data sources are updated daily to weekly depending on the agency. Our cached reports are refreshed every 14 days, or you can request a fresh report at any time to get the latest data.
Can I compare multiple addresses?
Yes! Search for multiple addresses and compare their livability scores side by side. This is especially useful when deciding between apartments in different neighborhoods.
Is DwellCheck available outside NYC?
Currently, DwellCheck only supports New York City addresses (all five boroughs). We rely on NYC-specific data sources that are not available elsewhere. We may expand to other cities in the future.
