How the Biophilic Score works
Each home gets three 0–10 sub-scores, measured from NYC Open Data and combined into its Biophilic Score:
- Street trees (40%) — estimated crown cover of every live street tree within 200 meters, from the NYC Street Tree Census. Bigger and healthier trees count more, and trees on your own block count more than trees two blocks away.
- Green nearby (25%) — walking distance to the edge of the nearest green space of at least 1.2 acres. The World Health Organization recommends one within 300 meters; meeting that scores 6, and living across the street scores 10.
- Large parks (35%) — park and nature acreage within walking distance, counting closer acres more. Living on Prospect Park scores 10; being near a small neighborhood park scores much lower.
Distances are measured to a park's edge, not its center, so homes facing a large park get full credit. Playgrounds, plazas, and paved courts don't count as green space. Cemeteries such as Green-Wood do.
Private outdoor space (gardens, terraces, roof decks) isn't scored yet: the listing data for it isn't reliable enough. Multiple units in the same building are shown once, using the highest-scoring unit.
Frequently asked questions
1What makes a home "biophilic"?
Biophilic design is about daily contact with nature: trees outside the window, green space at the end of the block, and real nature within walking distance. Each home gets a 0–10 Biophilic Score from three measurements: street-tree canopy around the home (40%), distance to the nearest green space of at least 1.2 acres (25%), and how much park and nature acreage is within walking distance (35%). Private outdoor space is not scored yet because listing data on terraces and yards is not reliable enough.
2Where does this data come from?
Listings come from DwellScore, DwellCheck's listing-intelligence engine, and originate on Zillow. DwellCheck measures the nature around each home itself from NYC Open Data: the NYC Street Tree Census for canopy, NYC Parks property boundaries for parks, and the NYC Planimetric open-space layer for cemeteries such as Green-Wood.
3Are these homes still for sale?
Not necessarily. We only include listings first seen in the 120 days before November 4, 2026, but homes sell quickly and we do not verify availability in real time. Always click through to the listing to confirm it is still on the market.
4Why is my favorite tree-lined block missing?
The list ranks individual homes that were for sale when it was compiled, not neighborhoods. A leafy block only appears if a home on it was listed during the window. Coverage is currently concentrated in Brooklyn.
5How do I check the nature and livability around a specific address?
Enter any NYC address on DwellCheck to see park access, tree canopy, noise, building violations, and safety for that exact block.
